Coached From the Other Side of the Atlantic
“Working with JW has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my athletic life. From the very first contact, he has shown a rare combination of deep technical expertise, intuitive insight, and genuine care for the individual behind the athlete. Over the past months, JW has coached me online in preparation for a half marathon and now a multi-day ultrarunning challenge, followed by a long-term goal to qualify for the UTMB. Despite the physical distance (he is based in Canada and I am in the Netherlands), his presence has been constant.
“His feedback is always thoughtful, timely, and remarkably well tailored to my progress and circumstances. JW does not just look at numbers, he looks at the person. He adapted my schedule when I was recovering from setbacks, celebrated victories, and helped me break through performance plateaus. His approach has had a positive influence on my lifestyle, sleep and mental outlook. He has a rare ability to balance science, structure and soul.”

Three Trail Races, One Summer
“My goal was to complete three trail races in one summer: the 27K Dead Horse at the Klondike Ultra, the 54K at Sinister 7 and the 42K Near Death at the Canadian Death Race. I knew I needed someone to make the plan for me to follow. If it was up to me, it would not get done.
“The schedule came out each Saturday, so I would wake up, see what was on the schedule and get it done. No thinking about what had to be done today. The 80/20 was new to me, and some days were harder to trust than others. JW would always tell me to just go with it. It will work. So I did. After Sinister 7, my aha moment was that slow and steady training does work. I met my goal of all three distances and hardly missed a session. I can do hard things.”

A 100-Mile Finish and a Boston Qualifier
“I was skeptical at first with the 80/20 training. Sinister 7 was my third attempt at the 100-mile solo. JW provided the training runs to have me physically ready, and he worked with me on the mental side too. A number of things went not as planned, including a bad fall and a broken running pole, and I shook them off with the mental preparedness I had. I finished in 29:33:24, second in the Female Masters class.
“Then I decided to spring a surprise on my poor coach. If JW could help me finish Sinister 7, he could help me qualify for Boston. We changed gears, and my 3:31:02 at the Edmonton marathon was fast enough to get me in. I signed up for the 100-mile Iron Horse Ultra and finished in 22:48:43, first female. The following spring I ran Boston. Trust in the process is what JW would say to me, and I am so thankful I did.”

Finishing the Sinister Triple Twice
“I started running after the age of 30. After my first 54K I realized I could do it, and I knew a triple of 50K, 42K and 54K would need help. With JW’s guidance I have completed the Sinister triple twice, each with a different PB, and one more race after the triple earned me the 4 Horsemen. I shaved 45 minutes off my previous best in the final 54K.
“I had only focused on cardio and never really knew how to strength train. What surprised me most is that I could do a long run and not be totally beat the rest of the day, and that I did not need a tonne of 50K runs to race a 50K. I feel stronger, more flexible and far less sick on a regular basis. It is a great way to get the distances done without it totally changing your everyday life.”
